I used one of those clapper hands to hot glue the pieces onto. After summarizing using these elements we can clap for ourselves and the story! Fun!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT7f6Rate7qvBSYTEkIlpBPbZozmZrs1Gy1Prfe9VbJoJiRAEQOVlMwKwbG6qZwYFl2WUf4LkESxC_hW0fozFtXBrRsXptZVege3j7RmA_7KToy2cRxTgGWHA2duW4VDz9ohEJ6mg8pSg/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT7f6Rate7qvBSYTEkIlpBPbZozmZrs1Gy1Prfe9VbJoJiRAEQOVlMwKwbG6qZwYFl2WUf4LkESxC_hW0fozFtXBrRsXptZVege3j7RmA_7KToy2cRxTgGWHA2duW4VDz9ohEJ6mg8pSg/w480-h640/image.png" width="480" /></a></div><br />My kids have been getting so good at this skill! This is one such investigation! I like using this one while introducing the scientific process. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjVgtHvFC0baM5h8VpP3I8pxxwqJLNb9ZM53MlETB_m8jtF2ffENCFNiw8zAj7YA_XJk6TEmP64RV8eJNrTTvNdjBbFtRMSQ4HoLXs3YWXIILu0Yp1jvXw0Q0U3QnyV6ftmNgLddhX80GSb4n29u0rhEFp9rM5Qtwc-WRv3UUxrNUR6MvsdZrfRQtqH" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2387" data-original-width="2979" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjVgtHvFC0baM5h8VpP3I8pxxwqJLNb9ZM53MlETB_m8jtF2ffENCFNiw8zAj7YA_XJk6TEmP64RV8eJNrTTvNdjBbFtRMSQ4HoLXs3YWXIILu0Yp1jvXw0Q0U3QnyV6ftmNgLddhX80GSb4n29u0rhEFp9rM5Qtwc-WRv3UUxrNUR6MvsdZrfRQtqH=w640-h512" width="640" /></a></div><br /><span style="text-align: center;">Students learn that scientists work through a series of steps that include: Question, Hypothesis, Procedure, Observation and Conclusion. They begin with thinking about Skittles and what might happen if warm water touches the candy. We use our background knowledge as we think about what happens to this candy in our mouths. What do our tongues look like after sucking on one in our mouths? Students make a hypothesis. I like giving students possible hypotheses to begin with while they are still learning how to make one themselves. We always state these in When...then... statements.</span><p></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">Then we get into our science circles and conduct the experiment. For this one, I want my kids close to the action so they can clearly see the result. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjv12R0m2y-zekkIcYHS46Vb9JEL0Glem3w-LYC2ASB2Td7uebIWQtiZnVwAyRUgZsd4QVKGyVUQmiKxqAN603q7R2POxvzwIal54z4x1FeqcFNjeveiEwq1w-Gy9DqoT5KApllHEbJpeLbcJKe0aA3GBJkbukqkfpGP7b5SjQrIneAC_IBvo1c3QxI" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="473" data-original-width="475" height="637" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjv12R0m2y-zekkIcYHS46Vb9JEL0Glem3w-LYC2ASB2Td7uebIWQtiZnVwAyRUgZsd4QVKGyVUQmiKxqAN603q7R2POxvzwIal54z4x1FeqcFNjeveiEwq1w-Gy9DqoT5KApllHEbJpeLbcJKe0aA3GBJkbukqkfpGP7b5SjQrIneAC_IBvo1c3QxI=w640-h637" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjYZ-X0VMwXbWNOiRcDv6_Bd99ihrj3cCdCmvpSM-oZbULBlW5nedPk8CVgSz6SfC67L2-prXQeoCB_SJqpSwKwLnLf7aQ1Gd-WvXjtyfq7_NO0-29_3u_T7ECU35cNey_lcmdS0Fc6DYbW6fXSCwAhvQnTzM7KsjiAbH9wCX0VAmGB9ebdhmfDB7pF" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjYZ-X0VMwXbWNOiRcDv6_Bd99ihrj3cCdCmvpSM-oZbULBlW5nedPk8CVgSz6SfC67L2-prXQeoCB_SJqpSwKwLnLf7aQ1Gd-WvXjtyfq7_NO0-29_3u_T7ECU35cNey_lcmdS0Fc6DYbW6fXSCwAhvQnTzM7KsjiAbH9wCX0VAmGB9ebdhmfDB7pF=w480-h640" width="480" /></a></div><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Then students illustrate their observations and write a conclusion. </div><p></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFUGlBCpRtTEikgoTtXaNti-0X5kC6EO3SQ-CIn0npfcLswFMZy6URHJrjf2mkR8avnt-5ZjsZ-5ftH2rAtPFSGwUqoajmu4_n40Fep_fqf-RqGSYK8SwOM40H5BiCw-bEUk9ZlM4vUxuFzWOsNzdEuvDRgT0Rstz6yNTDdUY8VeyuUnjDaLjSaMkH" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFUGlBCpRtTEikgoTtXaNti-0X5kC6EO3SQ-CIn0npfcLswFMZy6URHJrjf2mkR8avnt-5ZjsZ-5ftH2rAtPFSGwUqoajmu4_n40Fep_fqf-RqGSYK8SwOM40H5BiCw-bEUk9ZlM4vUxuFzWOsNzdEuvDRgT0Rstz6yNTDdUY8VeyuUnjDaLjSaMkH=w480-h640" width="480" /></a></div><br />I added this to my TPT store as a free resource. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">You can check it out here: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhzxJE79eECzzRqwxmPaPKEb4bsbpEm5-vQ20I7LcLiD921tG7_FgxU_0Wakbw_9RBgKjmTn9jOSmSghSLyG0N_p_y1eaQsamCawehqKCdmoFIBIoeMjKc-RIUXo5-IcKlAZxh325O-iZvJYj05UOqgFSRrfZnqPEpKMcb2O-8YvQxAMjEyUgYOT3kT" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="437" data-original-width="337" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhzxJE79eECzzRqwxmPaPKEb4bsbpEm5-vQ20I7LcLiD921tG7_FgxU_0Wakbw_9RBgKjmTn9jOSmSghSLyG0N_p_y1eaQsamCawehqKCdmoFIBIoeMjKc-RIUXo5-IcKlAZxh325O-iZvJYj05UOqgFSRrfZnqPEpKMcb2O-8YvQxAMjEyUgYOT3kT=w308-h400" width="308" /></a></div><br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Scientific-Process-Lets-Make-a-Candy-Rainbow-9256083">Let's Make a Candy Rainbow</a><br /></div><br /><p></p>Doris Younghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10374953879008620302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1389126445314104052.post-87044991056202836972023-01-02T05:24:00.002-08:002023-01-02T08:57:28.664-08:00Using the High Five Habit with Kids: Story and Activities to Encourage Perseverance<p style="text-align: center;"> Happy 2023!</p><p style="text-align: center;">Are you making resolutions? Many are behind and no one knows it and feels it more than they do. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My kids are such rockstars. They come in every day to do work that is HARD and it is easy to get frustrated. I want them to know that with time and practice they can achieve. More than anything, I can't have them give up. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So I bought a mirror for my classroom and we will give the High 5 Habit with my kids. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I wanted a way to introduce this new habit with my kids. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I wrote a little story about a penguin named Polly who felt discouraged and embarrased because he couldn't do something all his friends could...he couldn't swim. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">He gets advice from Sammy the Snowman and gives himself a high 5 everyday. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It takes time, but he doesn't give up and in the end, he achieves his goal. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I have this story as a powerpoint slide show so I plan on reading the story with the students first and then will print out and put together booklets for kids to read a second time on their own or better yet, with a partner. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1UBPjqgR4qhsAFYz6xKDQGMJEgJtkjAadVBxFUJZ9zo0NJ11bZjLPBbuTmY6dxf-ohV7-xeN11C2pyEA6XPD-CGCvorEK5TGyFWqO2xcx2Lwcv_41TCO97RtM7FxzhbixtL9Pr7KkByY/" style="margin-left: 1em; I think all kids should learn how to make a paper snowflake...don't you? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's just one of those childhood memories that I have held onto. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We would make a ton of them, big and small, detailed and simple. It was great fun. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wanted to relive this joyful activity with my class so I came up with a way to integrate snowflake crafting,writing, and science. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First we made snowflakes. Many of my kids had never done it before. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now they are hooked and want to make an endless number of them!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We choose our favorite and turned it into a character for a story we were about to write. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We added eyes, mouth two arms and some mittens. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/5d/41/e2/5d41e222efe1d3da7a5a2e9247acf1b6.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our snowflake characters were ready to go on an adventure!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We reviewed our learning about the water cycle and how snowflakes are formed. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We recorded this on our brainstorming sheets. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/00/04/1d/00041d1bcdddd686649012bae3201913.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We decided to write an adventure story about our snowflakes in three parts. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first scene would have the snowflake falling from the sky. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The second scene the snowflake would land. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And finally, in the third scene, he would melt and evaporate...up he would go!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/37/99/e0/3799e09a31ba32e04ad83f3dc59d2469.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students drew three pictures detailing what would happen in their stories. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In this one, the snowflake landed on the wing of an airplane!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/bf/e2/45/bfe245972108d5c7a0e477d792fbf97d.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This snowflake never did melt and evaporate...it got made into snowcream, placed in the fridge and made friends with the milk and baby bottles!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/65/06/07/650607d3f3723f94d612ba13053b2c69.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Before actually writing down the story, students met with a writing partner to tell their stories. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We call this the oral rehearsal. It gives students a chance to think through their entire story and get feedback from a peer before writing. This step really helps my young writers. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/b8/ff/3d/b8ff3d9fe9eb4745e0d8676a1b492a1e.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then students were ready to write!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They loved seeing their writing displayed and enjoyed reading each others!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/8b/2d/65/8b2d65d9bd3c2e1a3472fc14c4091f80.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/f9/6f/03/f96f03be5b5d0a21f8d189f77a0c4875.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have added the materials for this lesson to my TPT store. I threw in a bonus snow poem and nonfiction passage and question set about snow too. </div>

Those who are not educators can not fully grasp just how overwhelming this year has been. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Nonetheless, I am so grateful that I get to teach some of my students face to face each day. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It has inspired me and has renewed my spirit. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I want to document this transition and so here I am blogging once again after a long while. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I hope you will join me as I try to make the most of the time I have left with my kids. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">They have been through a lot and we are all SO excited to be back!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">There have been many changes to be made in the actual physical environment of my classroom. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Hello Friends!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's been a while since I have posted anything and what a different world we live in!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
How are you managing?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Have you jumped enthusiastically into your role as a remote teacher or are you dragging yourself through it each day? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will say this has been a learning experience for me! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are closed down for the rest of the year so the challenge is how to teach and review important concepts before I send these kiddos to the next grade level. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One focus for me must be those power standards. Those real life skills that are necessary but sometimes challenging to teach and to learn. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are sending home a weekly learning slide show. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It includes daily lessons in each subject area. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL_alX3IcYc4Dpgq971UrQw9iA0IiIjVH-nnMzxD-eYPBIn9EI_faFjTqAItsCKxyA3IkGlZATj1AKZiweL8aBRlRFP3IOSsD_KtsGu3ZSexgQQ6PkqHEUHjNtItCDs3WvUNVKoOxiyTg/s1600/snip2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="522" data-original-width="695" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL_alX3IcYc4Dpgq971UrQw9iA0IiIjVH-nnMzxD-eYPBIn9EI_faFjTqAItsCKxyA3IkGlZATj1AKZiweL8aBRlRFP3IOSsD_KtsGu3ZSexgQQ6PkqHEUHjNtItCDs3WvUNVKoOxiyTg/s320/snip2.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For math, we are also sending home review problems to keep already taught skills sharp. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Problem solving is one of those power standards. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This year we used the CUBES strategy with good success. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Before using this strategy, my students would read a problem and immediately announce, "I don't get it!" Now I'll reply with, "Did you use CUBES?"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The CUBES strategy helps students break down a math story problem. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The letters in the word CUBES remind students of what good problem solvers focus on when solving story problems. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It goes like this: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOt0Jhdq2L-UnkxMvPC6SanN4gfbPztbRGL8DA72qkVVqLWUDXY9bQdRn6jAnBPNCCgfn_HvcHZY-hXwOf-C2YUQ9k3RhxX6k4Boq_tvhd94GOjMxS4l3ypppfflwV6PRJdTi76SpW-mY/s1600/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="634" data-original-width="337" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOt0Jhdq2L-UnkxMvPC6SanN4gfbPztbRGL8DA72qkVVqLWUDXY9bQdRn6jAnBPNCCgfn_HvcHZY-hXwOf-C2YUQ9k3RhxX6k4Boq_tvhd94GOjMxS4l3ypppfflwV6PRJdTi76SpW-mY/s320/Picture1.png" width="170" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I created a video tutorial for my students to watch to review what we learned in the classroom. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I can send this link through a Google Classroom or even through Class DoJo. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Being able to see and hear the strategy in action was so helpful to my students and parents! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then, I can send them the problem solving pages to work on and they can practice using CUBES themselves. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the video tutorial:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/lDB8W29kTFk/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lDB8W29kTFk?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Are you trying to review good math problem solving strategies? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

A Solution and New Resource by Jan Richardson<div style="text-align: center;">
The English language is hard, tricky, complicated. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Letters can make multiple sounds and there are always exceptions to the rules. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
No wonder why spelling is such a struggle for our little learners. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
No wonder why teachers have often felt at a loss as to how to teach spelling effectively. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="300" src="https://i.pinimg.com/originals/50/c1/d7/50c1d75fb6447fee8507334cc7e1772e.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have tried it all. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have used whole class spelling lists during the days of the old reading basals. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've tried all different configurations of Words Their Way. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lists and lists of words.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Whole group, small group, individual. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="400" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/52/83/04/528304f69ce38d8b8936c2bf59f09eda.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still have not figured it out. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Currently, my students have word study journals and work with words that follow grade level spelling patterns. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/05/eb/8d/05eb8d2a707daad4e06cf8ed8a8f69d0.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Is this the best method? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I can't say with confidence that it is. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That's why I was so thrilled when Scholastic informed me that Jan Richardson had just published a new book focused on the teaching of word study and phonics and that they were sending me two copies...one to use and one to gift to a lucky blog reader. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am a huge fan of Jan and her work in the area of literacy and in particular guided reading. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have read and reread her book <u>The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading</u>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/75/31/4e/75314ed65ed5b10c466f8113be96f939.jpg" width="480" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I channel my inner Jan each day as I meet with my small groups. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've seen the impact it has made in my reading instruction. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/3d/5a/18/3d5a18c62a8d29a6e5ab4a62aa17e38d.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I'm super excited and ready to dig into the companion to this resource: </div>

My kids absolutely love writing! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We organized a spot in the room for our writing supplies and offices. </div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/7d/b2/7d/7db27d209ebfc5e945501a276ba35920.jpg" width="480" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We decorated our writing folders with photographs, pictures and words to inspire our writing. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="300" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/91/d6/3a/91d63a84d93583804644ed75f85cba8a.jpg" width="400" /><br />
<br />
My kids are filling up pages.<br />
Sometimes they write to a prompt that I give them.<br />
Other times they get to choose their own writing topics.<br />
Writing in their journals is always a wise choice if they are a fast finisher and complete assignments early. So many of them WANT to write!<br />
That makes my teacher heart so happy!<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/0d/de/8d/0dde8d9f631c2b8d0c2873915b0dc4c7.jpg" /><br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/8f/d7/8d/8fd78d9995935ff23b3e175a882ed07c.jpg" /><br />
<br />
I loved that they were writing up a storm, but I wanted to be able to read and understand their writing. The whole purpose of putting pencil to paper, right?<br />
Although I knew my kids got instruction in using capitals, punctuation, sight words, handwriting, and sentence writing in earlier grades, they weren't always using what they had learned.<br />
<br />
I decided to spend one week reviewing their "Writing Responsibilities".<br />
I took one responsibility a day. I taught it explicitly using a visual slide show and then we practiced together using a practice page. After we posted the responsibility.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil3x-0LXfAphP59q3Dgu7Ma8F8AYe43xbU1YwyVjaf9fmQSx6y-kLQjI7W-usbGOVHDYm8d8Ichyphenhyphen8iwZGbDcxSidONytt5Q_yFUR2BBndogwadKwzoYslbddrte5N2SttDaSRUxhCf5nY/s1600/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="613" data-original-width="501" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil3x-0LXfAphP59q3Dgu7Ma8F8AYe43xbU1YwyVjaf9fmQSx6y-kLQjI7W-usbGOVHDYm8d8Ichyphenhyphen8iwZGbDcxSidONytt5Q_yFUR2BBndogwadKwzoYslbddrte5N2SttDaSRUxhCf5nY/s320/Picture1.png" width="261" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After the week our poster was complete and kids had a chance to review each important writing skill with me. Now I feel like it is fair to hold student writers responsible for using complete sentences, capitals, punctuation, correct spelling and neat handwriting.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/21/9e/17/219e17b8201889de0fbc6a3a9f83aa54.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
Now when we edit our drafts, kids know what to look for.<br />
<br />
<br />
In case you are feeling the same writing struggle, I decided to share.<br />
I have added this set to my TPT store.<br />

<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/dd/15/55/dd1555ad2bba2e20afaa95577d1f9d15.jpg" width="480" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's the first day of school.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What are your goals for the day? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For me, building relationships and establishing a classroom community is key to my lesson planning. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I like to spend time getting to know my new students on a personal level. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Plus, I want kids to make connections with kids.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We will be spending the next 10+ months together and will become a family of learners. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What we do these first weeks together will help form a foundation of respect and acceptance. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One way we can find out more about each others' likes and interests is through a first day activity called "Modeling Me". </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Play-Doh, Play Dough, Creative" src="https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2018/04/10/21/44/play-doh-3308885__340.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In this activity, students are given a bit of playdoh and get to model it into different shapes that tell something about themselves. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Many kids feel anxious and worried on their first day in a new classroom. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The act of manipulating the clay is also relaxing and calming...kind of like using a stress ball. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will "model" what to do with the clay first. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I usually model it into the faces of my own two children and tell them a little about my family. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Or I will model it into an airplane and tell students about my love of travel. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Kids are really interested in their teachers!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I give them theirs and let them have at it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the past, some kids modeled the clay into foods they like.....this student loves pizza.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/2d/d0/11/2dd011c7365202f47d3b0c7fe860acf5.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Others use the playdoh and model it into their pet.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/ee/40/56/ee40567bcdd9201f6fe57edeab86f19e.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You could stop the activity right there and just have kids walk about viewing each others' creations. Or have them form a sharing circle to show and tell what they created. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I often take it a step further and have them draw what they made and write a sentence or two about it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This student loves elephants and is drawing and writing about it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/ed/ae/7b/edae7bba89986067efe02ebb561b860b.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We found out that this student loves football and plays for a team.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/90/91/35/909135924e9aa0f07cc17cdd8ea0f8c0.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have a gymnast in our classroom family!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/4b/89/05/4b8905ff9451777af8471954057868bc.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love this first week activity because it is both engaging and enlightening. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am sharing this "Modeling Me!" page in my TPT store. </div>

<img alt="Bus, School, School Bus, Education, Transportation" height="360" src="https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2017/08/28/18/37/bus-2690793_960_720.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ready or not...here they come!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
School opens in 2 days in my county. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been busy prepping my classroom and thinking through first week lessons. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It seems each new year brings with it new blessings but also new challenges. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our classrooms are filled with students facing difficult and challenging life circumstances which in turn can greatly impact their behavior and thus their learning. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, I've decided to spend more time in the beginning of the year focusing on creating a well managed classroom environment. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For me that means spending more time explicitly teaching my kids the what and why's of school rules. They need to know what the rules are and why they are important. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then my plan is to enforce these rules fairly and consistently with positive and negative consequences. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This will take time in the beginning, but I feel it is necessary and worth it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At the same time, I am itching to start teaching! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So what I have decided to do is integrate the teaching of rules into my language arts block. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm doing this with poetry which can help my students get practice with rhyming words and fluency development. I've written a poem on the topic of school rules and will use this one during the first weeks of school. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I usually introduce a new poem through a whole group activity called, "Guess the Covered Word". </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Kids see this as a fun game, I see it as a way to get them to practice rhyming words and using context clues</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's how it goes,<br />
I display the first stanza of a poem but one of the words is covered. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="300" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/e7/85/b0/e785b0f46e115c86e8a01b82d15caaf5.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students use dry erase boards and markers to write what that missing word might be. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I call out some of the words students are showing and we "cross check" by reading it in the line to see if it makes sense. In doing this, I am modeling how to "monitor" for meaning....a good reader strategy!</div>

<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I then uncover the word and we practice chorally reading the stanza together. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then we proceed to the next stanza following the same steps.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="300" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/1d/2d/1b/1d2d1bfe2994290337275ea93716ae24.jpg" width="400" /><br />
<br />
We start with easy words, like the word "play" in the poem above.<br />
Then I will challenge them more by covering up some of the words inside the lines so that they can not rely on using a rhyme to help them. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Kids absolutely love "Guess the Covered Word"!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This poem will then get handed out for students to read again in a buddy reading station. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will work in opportunities for students to read it multiple times throughout the week.<br />
Here is this poem copied in book form.<br />
I will staple the books and kids can reread and color in the pages.<br />
Adding an original page of their own.<br />
Kids will also use these as a take home book to read aloud to parents.<br />
Now parents and kids are both aware of our rules!<br />
No excuses to misbehave, right?<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/cf/6b/d3/cf6bd32ed263c50d1871b25dad7a0c8f.jpg" /><br />
<br />
It can go in my writing station yet another day so that kids read it again but this time must respond in writing as well.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c0/a9/d5/c0a9d523d56a7aa07c2364503f881bff.jpg" /><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They build fluency with each reading.<br />
<br />
To reinforce the topic of rules, I have also created a board game for my kids to play.<br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/11/d4/61/11d4613d091ad236115dd8157db80383.jpg" /><br />
<br />
I will cut out the cards and place all pieces in a bag so it is ready to go.<br />
The game is super simple.<br />
Kids will roll a dice to see how many spaces they will move.<br />
Before moving, they will pick a card from the deck.<br />
They read and discuss the behavior with their partner.<br />
If the card states a positive behavior, they move that many spaces forwards.<br />
If the card states a negative behavior, they move that many spaces backwards.<br />
<br />
I think kids will have fun with this and it will also give them an opportunity to get to know some of their new friends in a game playing situation.<br />
<br />
I can walk about and monitor reinforce good partner play behaviors.<br />
<br />
As an additional partner practice activity, I created some puzzles that focus on rules.<br />
I just printed out the page and cut it into different pieces and threw it in a baggie...all while watching Netflix....teacher life, right?<br />
<br />
I will hand out baggies to partners and they can put together and then rotate to another one.<br />
I'm going to have them read WHAT rule they got and then have a conversation about WHY the rule is important.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/db/25/f3/db25f3e40570fef8a6010e3debb7a5e8.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
I can't wait to try this out with my new kids this year!<br />
<br />
I am sharing all these in a set on my TPT store for any other teachers out there who think they need to spend some time on importance of rules and appropriate behavior.<br />

Zig Ziglar</h1>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think all teachers understand and appreciate the thinking behind this quote. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Repetitious practice certainly can be key to developing skill in academic areas. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The problem is often that the pace in which we instruct is too fast and furious. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is often time to move onto new learning when we know quite well that our students need more time to practice the skills they are currently working on.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is why I always look for ways to sneak in more practice. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When it comes to math skills, one way I fit in constant review of prior learning is through our Calendar Time and Number of the Day. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I created sheets to fill in to review skills like place value, odd/even numbers, counting forwards, backwards, number lines, etc. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These sheets slide easily into dry erase page protectors. This allows us to write our answers on each sheet and then erase and use again. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="291" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/82/a1/e9/82a1e90980ad899dc11fda4ba78c6dc1.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div>
We pick a random number of the day. I have numbers cut and place them into a number can. My "Calendar Helper" pulls out two or three numbers to make a two or three digit "Number of the Day". </div>
<div>
The students work through identifying the word form, expanded, picture form of that number. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/ea/49/5c/ea495c14442ebad2804c2619b6c8d117.jpg" width="480" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We draw pictures of the base ten blocks and even work through a problem using a part/part/whole box. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/18/18/ae/1818aedaf3693874b1baa9a012d41c38.jpg" width="480" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We count forwards, backwards, identify ten more and less. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We even round the number using a number line. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/23/91/46/2391463f2c3a23a31474d96f315b36e7.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I change out the number cards seasonally to keep it fun. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
How cute are these snowman numbers?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Isn't there so much to cover during those first weeks of school!<br />
It can be hard to know what to include and what can wait.<br />
If I was to prioritize, I would say lessons that help familiarize students with literacy routines and expectations would rank in my top ten.<br />
I have been a long time follower of Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, aka: "The Sisters".<br />
Every year I rely on their wisdom in setting up my literacy block.<br />
Their book, The Daily 5 has guided me in this area and I use many of the lessons they outline for that first week of school.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/41/84/94/418494a008f22f6349ddf2a96e374d0c.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1571109749/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1571109749&linkCode=as2&tag=thirdgradethi-20&linkId=e7198871a20c604ce43eecbfaec46774"><span style="color: red;">Buy the Book: The Daily 5</span></a><br />
<br />
There's no arguing the point that the more time spent on real, actual reading, the more reading progress and growth a student will make. Of course, I want my students to grow in their ability to read, but just as importantly, I want them to grow in their LOVE of reading! I know I can get my kids hooked on books IF I help train them on picking ones that fit their interest and reading ability. Struggling through a book that is too hard or yawning through a book that does not interest them will just cause my students to see reading as a chore.<br />
I want my students to view reading as something they "<i>get to do</i>" not "<i>have to do</i>".<br />
<br />
Because of this, I will spend some time on lessons that are intentionally focused on helping students pick the right book for them: the Good Fit Book.<br />
<br />
In the book, <u>The Daily 5</u>, Boushey and Moser explain the acronym they use: I PICK and how student can use this as a guide to picking the books that are just right for them.<br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="300" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/6a/d6/12/6ad612a219a3ffed9d101bffbb053e4e.jpg" width="400" /><br />
<br />
<br />
The Sisters suggest the idea of introducing picking books through the analogy of picking shoes.<br />
They go into detail on how they work through this anchor lesson.<br />
<br />
Here's how the lesson goes.<br />
You bring in a collection of different kinds of shoes.<br />
They suggest: snow boots, tennis shoes, party shoes, hiking boots, etc.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/a3/bb/91/a3bb912ed0ab61eb6306c962fa20390c.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
<br />
Take out the shoes one at a time and show them to students.<br />
Talk about the purpose in wearing each one.<br />
<br />
You might take out a slipper and show it to students.<br />
Discuss how this shoe is perfect to slip on if you are walking around in your home in the evening.<br />
It fits that purpose.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/94/fe/e7/94fee7ad062f52acdf8a71fccf52209b.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
You could go on to explain how you would NOT wear the slipper to PE class at school.<br />
Choosing to wear a tennis shoe would be a better fit.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/f7/f8/92/f7f8920e794f3fad0079ca98c1eb29b8.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
Continue taking out shoes and discussing the purpose of each.<br />
<br />
From there you could go into how the picking of shoes is a lot like picking a book to read.<br />
<br />
For example:<br />
If you want to learn more about space and the planet Jupiter, you would not pick a book like this:<br />
<br />
<img src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51AKdoaa2eL._SY497_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" /><br />
<br />
You would be better off picking a book like this:<br />
<br />
<img height="400" src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61dKlW-weHL._SY498_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" width="400" /><br />
<br />
This is a great time to take a look at different kinds of books:<br />
<br />
Comic Books:<br />
<br />
<img src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51V-ZbSF2hL._SX336_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" /><br />
<br />
How to Books:<br />
<br />
<img height="400" src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51sbFBlyapL._SX404_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" width="324" /><br />
<br />
Discuss the purpose of reading these different kinds of books.<br />
<br />
Then it's time to introduce the letter "I" for Interest.<br />
Back to the shoes:<br />
<br />
Pull out a shoe such as a golf shoe.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/97/b3/71/97b371d98298750f228b1d603788dc59.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
Discuss how you may never want to pick this shoe to wear because you don't like playing golf.<br />
It doesn't interest you.<br />
<br />
Now it's time to relate this to picking books.<br />
I like showing students books that I like to read and those that would not interest me.<br />
<br />
I might show them this book and talk to them about how I would not pick it because the topic of motorcycles doesn't interest me.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51PPQBuBMSL._SX378_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" /><br />
<br />
But I may want to read this one because I am interested in antiques.<br />
<br />
<img src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/518Z3MNV85L._SX364_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" /><br />
<br />
I don't think we can overemphasize the idea that students should pick books that interest them.<br />
Once a student finds a book that they can't get enough of, we've got them hooked.<br />
They will begin reading volumes and with each turn of the page, become a better reader.<br />
<br />
For the last two steps of picking a book, we again take out a selection of shoes.<br />
This time, we pick out books that are not the right size.<br />
Maybe they are too big or too small.<br />
We won't pick these shoes to wear because they are just not comfortable.<br />
<br />
Now we relate that to the idea that we would not want to pick a book that is too hard or easy either.<br />
Reading a book that fits right feels right.<br />
Here is a good time to model reading the first page of certain books and play the part of a student who is figuring out if they can read the words and if they can understand what those words mean.<br />
<br />
I found a children's book that can serve as a great springboard into this lesson.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/cd/2a/f3/cd2af34a0c941da9e8e837bbdb3e3f14.jpg" /><br />

<br />
In this book, the character is choosing shoes for different activities.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/91/45/ef/9145ef60844ee28c57e62f3bd6c600d0.jpg" /><br />

<br />
I've included the link to a set of bookmarks to give your students after a lesson on picking books.<br />
Students can carry their bookmark to your class library before choosing their independent reading books. It can serve as a reminder as to what they should consider when making book choices.<br />
<br />

<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/8d/4f/af/8d4fafb4fdb57b2ec3897c18f149a375.jpg" width="480" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have a bit of a book haul for you today. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I went to the public library at just the right time. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The librarian was putting out some brand new books in the children's section. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I grabbed this stack to check out. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am always on the look out for new books to share with my kids.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think I may have found some great fresh reads to use for the beginning of the school year.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of my favorite back to school books has always been Chrysanthemum.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is a great one to use as a springboard to talking and learning the names of all of our new friends. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Chrysanthemum" src="https://prodimage.images-bn.com/pimages/9780688096991_p0_v2_s550x406.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In this book, Chrysanthemum dislikes her name until her teacher convinces her it is beautiful. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I shared a free math follow up to this story on my TPT store. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can access it here: </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
During my trip to the library, I came across another book based on a child's name that I may want to use in place of <u>Chrysanthemum</u>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is called, <u><span style="color: red;">Alma and How She Got Her Name</span></u> by Juana Martinez-Neal.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/b7/d4/8d/b7d48d4ee32c97b86d5e613ed151bb81.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In this book, Alma also dislikes her name. Her full name is 33 letters long and "it never fits"!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She complains to her father and he goes on to explain where each part of her name came from. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After learning more about her name she changes her mind and begins to love and appreciate it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Another character who has a problem with her name but through events in the story, changes her feelings. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I switched up the math follow up to go along with this book. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students write the letters of their name in the ten frame boxes. Then they record the number and try to represent that number in as many ways possible. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students may start with simple addition or subtraction equations, but challenge them to add other representations such as money, clock time, drawings, even tally marks. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This activity ends up being a quick informal assessment of a student's math understandings. </div>

<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/18/70/a7/1870a7c907d4858b5e4c58231725da15.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
My jack russell is feeling it and so am I....the dog days of summer!<br />
You know those hot, steamy days when your energy is zapped and all you want to do is lay by the pool sipping something cold, dozing off or doing some mindless (noneducational) reading.<br />
The joy of it all!!<br />
<br />
Typically I would just now be settling into this glorious routine.<br />
BUT, the truth is, I have been out of school since Memorial Day.<br />
And I will be reporting back for duty on August 1 this year.<br />
Yes, my days of rest and relaxation will soon come to an end.<br />
YIKES!<br />
<br />
Needless to say, part of my mind is beginning to switch over to school mode.<br />
Walking into Target and Walmart does not help as I see<br />
big boxes of school supplies are getting unloaded and shelved.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/80/3d/b8/803db831677778f0b6a335e63359243c.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
So this scene got me thinking about what journals, notebooks or folders I want my kids using this year.<br />
I know from experience that keeping my kids organized is key to a successful year.<br />
I may change it up some, but what I know I will continue with is how I've been recording our social studies and science learning.<br />
My students are using what I call the "Learning Log".<br />
<br />
At the beginning of the year, I print out labels for students' journals.<br />
Here are the ones that I am using this year.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/04/6c/e2/046ce287daf57d15f238cfa16a597b38.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
You can grab these labels from Amazon:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PMHURI/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thirdgradethi-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B001PMHURI&linkId=64a6726e7e01e9463f9da2c86f5250a4">Avery Labels</a><br />
<br />
They use one of their marble composition books as a learning log.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/25/94/f4/2594f491ced2be07359dc19d897ea977.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
It contains all our social studies and science learning in one book.<br />
Each unit begins with a tabbed divider that students glue in.<br />
They glue it so that the tab peeks out just a bit.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/d9/fd/07/d9fd074686b18348fac985b9803fe422.jpg" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/e5/b1/84/e5b184f4bc3f1e43e3f926e02f8a4957.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/5c/23/a8/5c23a8342bbc368469155d14e7a72d7a.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
In my county, we alternate social studies and then science learning.<br />
So this works great for us.<br />
One section is science and the next social studies.<br />
I loved how it all was in one notebook.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/35/6d/4a/356d4a06bdcdf469547e43cc2473e496.jpg" /><br />
<br />
After the tab, the students glue down "fill in the blank" pages to record that we have learned about the topic. We do this together so that I can monitor and guide, making sure that everyone is getting the correct information down. This will then serve as one of their main study tools before a test.<br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/62/36/9a/62369a627b54052c240b030cfdd4631c.jpg" /><br />
<br />
By the end of the year, their journal was just about completely full.<br />
I love that their whole year's worth of learning was available for them to take home.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/aa/31/07/aa3107a931961bb10f4fd1d62b8b22ed.jpg" /><br />
<br />
On some pages, students glued down envelopes that housed vocabulary cards.<br />
Most pages were what we called, "slice and stick" pages.<br />
Students cut the pages into two parts and glued them down and then we filled them out.<br />
Super simple so that most of our time was spent doing hands on investigations or researching for information.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/36/98/26/369826cdfb3677227e52b97635609268.jpg" /><br />
<br />
If students were successful in completing a unit, they would get a brag tag.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/32/4a/a4/324aa4a4e09a5dbd7e42723ab4e34f81.jpg" /><br />
<br />
You can read more about how I use these brag tags here:<br />

<br />
Let me know if you would like the editable divider pages or Learning Log labels.<br />
I'd be glad to share them with you!<br />
<br />
I've since added the Learning Log labels and editable dividers to my TPT store.<br />

I have been a Jan fan for close to a decade now.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Jan Richardson is the author of the book, <u>The Next Step in Guided Reading</u> which was first published in 2009. This has been my go to resource for all things Guided Reading. In it, Jan outlines her straightforward approach to guided reading and supplies teachers with the information, tools and resources needed to implement it. </div>
<img alt=" " height="320" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/f6/77/23/f67723c927bf13b7fcb7c999171930bb.jpg" style="text-align: left;" width="240" /><br />
<br />
She has since come up with a revised edition called the <u>Next Step Forward in Guided Reading</u>.<br />
In this book, Jan gives an overview of guided reading in a balanced literacy program. Then she focuses on the different levels of reading, the characteristics of readers and provides a framework that will help students grow and progress through these stages.<br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="400" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/75/31/4e/75314ed65ed5b10c466f8113be96f939.jpg" width="300" /><br />
<br />
She refers to this one as "An Assess-Decide-Guide Framework for Supporting Every Reader".<br />
<br />
<br />
So when I heard that reading consultant and Jan's coauthor, Ellen Lewis, was leading a training session for our division on their intervention framework: <u>The Rise Program</u>, I was all in!<br />
I signed up immediately.<br />
<br />
<img alt="Image result for rise reading intervention book" src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51B3cdT0vJL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" /><br />
<br />
You can purchase this book from Amazon:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1338298267/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thirdgradethi-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=1338298267&linkId=9bb8c86fbf2a63c8ed3357b59ea003d7">The Rise Framework</a><br />
<br />
It was the day of the training and honestly as I was driving to school, I began second guessing my decision to sacrifice a day...I was officially on summer vacation and it was a gorgeous day to be outside. Yet, once I met Ellen I knew I made the right decision. Ellen is an energetic, entertaining, no nonsense presenter and I loved learning from her.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/90/60/18/906018f4619c63f7f38e6f9524d2b31e.jpg" /><br />
<br />
This ended up being time well spent, as I got to spend the day learning how to implement the RISE framework which provides striving readers with intensive, short-term targeted instruction in reading, writing, word study and comprehension.<br />
<br />
Ellen was able to share recent End of the Year data highlighting the success that students have made using this approach. She was excited to show us, and rightly so, their results were more than impressive. Teachers from schools across the country were sharing their data and large numbers of readers who were "stuck" and struggling to make progress were finally growing by leaps and bounds using the RISE framework.<br />
<br />
The more I heard, the more excited I became. This is a result driven intervention holding the promise of finally closing gaps for striving readers. This program covers all the bases, so no more trying to piece together interventions that meets the needs of all readers. This seems to do it all....for all.<br />
As with T<u>he Next Step Forward in Guided Reading</u>, Jan and Ellen take teachers step by step through the implementation of their framework.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="400" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/ce/ff/85/ceff852be9bce65e57baae474ebecae8.jpg" width="300" /><br />
<br />
Now, RISE <i>is</i> an intensive 6-8 week program that requires a team of 4 teachers or paraprofessionals and a time commitment of one hour a day. This may seem hard to manage for some, so the question needs to be posed, "What are we willing to do? What are we willing to sacrifice in order to help more students achieve grade level reading proficiency?" For years at our school, we have been jumping from intervention to intervention trying to find something that will make a positive difference for our striving readers. So far nothing has yielded the results we were working so hard for. This program seems different and is so comprehensive and result oriented. I'm super excited that our school will be taking the plunge and making the investment in the time and resources needed to implement the RISE intervention next year.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="400" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/95/ec/96/95ec96fb36a4d786420db928a64782bb.jpg" width="300" /><br />
<br />
So what will it look like?<br />
The first step is selecting the 12-16 students in grades 1-5 reading texts at levels C-N who would benefit from such a program.<br />
These students will be pulled from classrooms daily to work in 4 stations run by our reading teacher and a group of paraprofessionals. The work students will be doing in each of the stations is very similar to the activities that Jan Richardson recommends in her book, The Next Step in Guided Reading. Instruction is driven by ongoing assessments and observations and is targeted to the needs of the readers in the group.<br />
<br />
The students will be reading a new book, working through word study activities, rereading yesterday's book and participating in guided writing. The program is explained in detail in her book. Progress is monitored and the intention is that students will make the intended progress and move out of this program and back into the regular classroom after 6-8 weeks.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="400" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/3b/32/b5/3b32b5f3596eea7481e86fe8b0074d8e.jpg" width="300" /><br />
<br />
Ellen shared that results are promising and that the majority of students who have exited the program have been able to maintain their progress. It is important to mention that classroom teachers are expected to utilize Jan Richardson's steps to guided reading in order to provide these students with all that they need to continue moving forward.<br />
<br />
Here is an outline of the RISE intervention framework:<br />
<div style="direction: ltr; language: en-US; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; mso-line-break-override: none; punctuation-wrap: hanging; text-align: left; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">

I love "digging" into content area studies. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My science block is only 30 minutes and I often need to reserve that time for experimenting and hands on learning. Many times my solution is to slide science reading into my language arts block as a way to get it all in and give my students more exposure to informational reading. We can still work on using reading skills and strategies but with text that aligns to our science or social studies content. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At this point we were working on a unit on soil so after we examined soil and figured out what it was, we went into our science book to do some nonfiction reading on the topic. Using our textbook allows students to have some experience with using tables of content, glossaries and indexes. It also exposes them to nonfiction text features like the headings, illustrations and labels. We found this great diagram of the layers of soil and we decided to recreate it.
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We made a flipbook that includes the major soil layers or horizons. I had a parent volunteer cut and staple the books together and I typed up the descriptions of each one. (See below)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGkAYlHv7KG0PPB0SNAI69yiLRZpTcXjuFtkwySgd37VAMZzt3BgfxF-Eos4N3R3nAmj3SrKSvHKf8zAomsgonyDwKXOuakHfWPEknZbMrHJyaTQ8l4tT04ypWyUwTDqndnio75t0NU6xF/s1600/IMG_2953.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGkAYlHv7KG0PPB0SNAI69yiLRZpTcXjuFtkwySgd37VAMZzt3BgfxF-Eos4N3R3nAmj3SrKSvHKf8zAomsgonyDwKXOuakHfWPEknZbMrHJyaTQ8l4tT04ypWyUwTDqndnio75t0NU6xF/s320/IMG_2953.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I like to have students fill out the Cloze Notes on topics we study. Third graders are not quite ready to write all the notes independently but are certainly capable of filling in key words on a note sheet. This also helps them work on using context clues. For this set of notes I gave them the first letter of the missing words. We filled it out and discussed it together. <br />

Here is an example of a finished product. Now it is ready to go home to be studied. Our "make and take" for this unit is a soil bag (big ziplock). It will include this flip book, vocabulary cards and some note sheets and diagrams. </div>

<span style="color: magenta; font-size: x-large;">Happy Mother's Day!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Are you short in money and in minutes? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then this is your kind of Mother's Day Craft.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I picked these tiles up at Home Depot for a mere 11 cents each. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I grabbed some clear acrylic spray and scrounged up a basket of colorful sharpies. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We were all set to craft and create a special Mother's Day present. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/1e/3a/07/1e3a072e9322e1cc233f8df1eba1fc50.jpg" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My students all ooed and awed over the pretty "teacher" markers they got to use. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They had to earn their way to the "creation station". They were good as gold!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They created great pieces that I know their mamas will treasure. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

All you need is some white cardstock, Easter colored SOLO cups, and Easter grass. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dx8_0Ngq45u7QvqRV-9-d8_o8o9pWWE-h73QPJVSqbEc0OzMh-4RJpSxRp_oNHq4eFIeWpj60XlGbASLcq4aQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
It's Spring! Hallelujah!<br />
The praise team at my church allowed the little ones to come up and play "drums" for this song.<br />
How cute! God's beauty is certainly on display here in Virginia already this year. <br />
The trees are budding and the flowers are waking up. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think teachers and children alike are so ready to feel the spring breezes and feel the warm sun again! <br />
I love looking for ways to celebrate the changing season with my students. We had great fun last week reading a spring story and making these spring summary kites. </div>
<a href="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/5a/a6/b6/5aa6b6289b535ef1cb7f9c18d0409e8d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img alt=" " border="0" height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/5a/a6/b6/5aa6b6289b535ef1cb7f9c18d0409e8d.jpg" width="513" /></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br />
We began by reading the tale, <u>The Wind and the Sun</u>.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="400" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/f2/04/ec/f204ecf4e6478f68640097d946b2441d.jpg" width="300" /><br />
<br />
We used our 5 Finger Summarizing Hand to help us remember the elements of a fictional story.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/04/26/64/0426645f78382ca8e4d80befd599b383.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
Then we began recording our thinking about the story onto the kite template.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="400" src="https://i-h2.pinimg.com/564x/24/fb/80/24fb808c4c1c012f69959cf8a6c3b837.jpg" width="300" /><br />
<br />
We glued the pieces on a colorful piece of construction paper and cut them out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Students added illustrations of each part to retell the story using their "mind movies". </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/b6/c2/76/b6c276b2655e1ae08a19338ade0c6742.jpg" width="527" /><br />
<br />
We all read the same story for this summarizing lesson but it would also be fun for kids to all read different stories and summarize them using this kite idea. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/89/95/d6/8995d6bd6f3e2761623527c60cf21a04.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
We displayed our kites for others to see and read. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/90/58/f0/9058f0eee1b9b028e21fb3d1d29758ba.jpg" width="480" /><br />
<br />
We are high flying summarizers!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="480" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/87/94/fa/8794faae5063467af6e14d466029fdce.jpg" width="640" /><br />
<br />
I've added this set to my TPT store.<br />
It includes the story, kite template and a bonus....a kite poem and language skills review.<br />
Perfect for a reading station.<br />

My kids have begun researching and I absolutely love it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It makes my teacher heart happy to see them hard at work finding the answers to questions they have about subjects they are interested in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They are finding out that they don't need their teacher to learn...they just need books!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/67/a7/43/67a7436b5e8a24958e8246b16ce31e77.jpg" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They are collecting information and organizing it in research folders and having a blast doing it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/22/af/ca/22afcac9ab6d84466847b0da4ce251a2.jpg" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Along the way, we have been fine tuning our research skills with mini lessons on how to use a nonfiction book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My students are quickly understanding that knowing how to use parts of the book such as a Table of Contents or an Index can make their job of locating specific information a whole lot easier. It is much more efficient to search for the facts they need by using an index rather than flipping randomly through the pages of the book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I created a slide show for teaching the Table of Contents, Index and Glossary. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/89/e3/86/89e3864c01b6b01ffff0b815e071f730.jpg" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It includes practice pages and resources. It made covering these important and necessary reading skills quick and easy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I added it to my TPT store. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can click the link below to check it out: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img alt="Nonfiction: Let's Learn about the Table of Contents, Index and Glossary" src="https://ecdn.teacherspayteachers.com/thumbitem/Nonfiction-Let-s-Learn-about-the-Table-of-Contents-Index-and-Glossary-4336818-1548617404/original-4336818-1.jpg" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now I can just coach them as they use these text resources while they research. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Real life practice is the best!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We have been working on solving addition and subtraction story problems. Students are gaining a better understanding of when to add and when subtraction is the necessary operation. Now it's time to raise the bar. It's time for students to begin creating their own. Explicit teaching and modeling of this type of skill is always my approach. Most students need support and guidance in the transition from being the solver to being the writer.
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I begin the process by activating my students' prior knowledge. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We need to review these two operations and when and why we use each one. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBXUs_TurvZVsxralB8CyiN5NNvCvP6TYjOr5NRjMpuKLFruS8ORu4HTI9hecb9uGaxa6LfSwkH6e4N5nmA39LxzkKD3d_59nk3wiCu1_5iDHjCMm6F1OiIBjy6UOdBoGiALVJOYST4Yk/s1600/add.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="402" data-original-width="543" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBXUs_TurvZVsxralB8CyiN5NNvCvP6TYjOr5NRjMpuKLFruS8ORu4HTI9hecb9uGaxa6LfSwkH6e4N5nmA39LxzkKD3d_59nk3wiCu1_5iDHjCMm6F1OiIBjy6UOdBoGiALVJOYST4Yk/s320/add.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I created a sorting activity involving key words and example problems. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students repeat this sort often as we gain proficiency in identifying types of problems. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then students are ready to begin tackling the job of writing their own!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We take this slowly with lots of explicit modeling. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxpISErKXiJ6DZ6_lJWDlez2VgJImUX0T1ZgMZUnv_B2yRYw1jGhEMnHjsTbDgRs_xiQDA8UquZQHVlk07GGeNf96YC_dDsCn62Rb7ZUFlMUYICW3FaEd3CWEf6siSSWct5fmXdUzylrM/s1600/prob.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="411" data-original-width="539" height="244" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxpISErKXiJ6DZ6_lJWDlez2VgJImUX0T1ZgMZUnv_B2yRYw1jGhEMnHjsTbDgRs_xiQDA8UquZQHVlk07GGeNf96YC_dDsCn62Rb7ZUFlMUYICW3FaEd3CWEf6siSSWct5fmXdUzylrM/s320/prob.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To help students with the task of creating problems and to make it more fun, I use problem solving picture cards and number spinners. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Students pull a card. They use the picture as an idea or the basis for their story problem. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="400" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/f2/c4/d1/f2c4d1ce5d57d7ba8c60e26b48bedb90.jpg" width="400" /><br />
<br />
Then they spin the spinner to determine the numbers they will use in their problem.<br />
They can spin once, twice or even three times depending on whether they will use a one, two or three digit number in their problem.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/e3/88/5e/e3885e791d083ae01b4eb47301505511.jpg" width="480" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using the problem solving graphic organizer breaks the process into concrete steps. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All students can be successful. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/0d/e2/7f/0de27f23188bc9938bdb08c0ef7e7a9c.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We started by solving our own. But now many kids are such pros at it, they can switch off papers and read and solve each others!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/dc/84/45/dc8445c8ef4e3d4764114c56774abcba.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We had great fun using the winter set since we are still celebrating this cold and frosty season. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Another set is ready for use at any time of the year. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll put this out as a math station or for my fast finishers to use. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I started using Brag Tags this year as a way to reward my students' positive behaviors.<br />
Students have earned tags for being excellent listeners, helping others and great citizenship along with lots of others.<br />
<br />
They were so into earning these tags that I wondered if it would also encourage them with their academic progress. <br />
<br />
I started previewing the tags they could earn for showing good mastery of content area learning.<br />
Students keep a learning log that includes notes on our content area learning. If notes were complete and neat and they demonstrated a good understanding of their science and social studies learning, they would receive a topic tag.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/f8/65/5f/f8655ff573599d77f712c0420f93723c.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also like how the collection of topic tags helps students keep track of ALL the learning they did this year!<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/fc/f7/a6/fcf7a6ca3d338150ef1f06c91f952650.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Our students cover A LOT of learning in just a year's time!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/40/08/8e/40088ee46d23ba5d247a3c38f0d633af.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students are so proud of their accomplishments!<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/9c/74/13/9c7413e75213340d97d631c211c33c7d.jpg" /><br />
<br />
I hang student brag tags on the side of a filing cabinet.<br />
They collect them all week and then get to wear them on Fridays.<br />
<br />

Let's Write a Friendship Poem!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's February....time to celebrate friendship!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Friends are really important to our students. I like using the topic of friendship as a writers workshop piece right before Valentine's Day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My kids are writing up a storm and I love using their writer's folders to manage all the writing they are doing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I posted about these folders in a past entry so scroll back a bit if you are interested in hearing more about these. I have the printables available on my TPT store. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You could check here:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Doubling the folders allow students to have a section to glue notes and another section for references.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I use these "Slice and Stick" note sheets in this front section. </div>

<br /></div>

I LOVE using mentor texts when teaching writing. Here is a super book to use to jump into the topic of friendship. This is a great read for the month of February! After reading this one we will create an anchor chart on "How to be a True Friend". I also focused on identifying causes/effects in this one since that is our reading focus but this book could be used for MANY teaching points! Use it for what your kids need. </div>

The next day I introduce a patterned poem by Jessica Crum entitled: Friends. I use the technique of "Guess the Covered Word" to get students to practice using context clues when reading. Then this one is glued into the poetry journal where they will get much practice reading it multiple times. The next day I tell students we are going to borrow Jessica Crum's pattern to create our own patterned poems about friends. We work through the writing process together as we brainstorm, draft, revise and edit. I am sharing this eight day lesson plan with all graphic organizers, mini lesson notes, drafting paper, and grading rubric in my TPT store. </div>

Graphic organizers like webbing and brace maps helped my writers generate and then organize ideas. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I work my teaching of complete sentences and fragments, subjects and predicates into my writing block. It just makes sense to teach it there. We analyze Jessica's sentences for completeness and then make sure we don't include fragments in our drafts. I also teach how to edit for spelling through this writing lesson. </div>

This is one of my favorite writing lessons. It is simple to carry out and all students will be successful in producing a great final product. It also introduces the basics about what good writers do. This was my fifth year in a row using this lesson and I never tire from using it and seeing what the kids produce.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you try it let me know how it goes! </div>

Happy writing!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I believe children are innately curious creatures. I spent some years working with preschoolers. I would take them on walks and would watch and listen to their inquisitive minds at work as they found little treasures along the way. An odd looking rock, worms wriggling about after a storm, even their own shadow would set the wheels in their brains turning. Observations and questions would come spilling out. Many I had no answers for. They had such joy and fascination with the world around them. Such little scientists!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now I teach 8-9 year olds in a public school setting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our days are full, our schedule is tight, our pace is fast. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Is there time for curiosity between the reading groups, the math lessons, the many tests? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
An April 2018 article published in Pediatric Research suggests that curiosity may be an important, yet under-recognized contributor to academic success. <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "lora" , "palatino" , "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 17px; letter-spacing: 0.17px;"> </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "lora" , "palatino" , "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 17px; letter-spacing: 0.17px;">Isn't that what school is supposed to be about? </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "lora" , "palatino" , "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 17px; letter-spacing: 0.17px;">The state curriculum guides and pacing charts are going nowhere. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "lora" , "palatino" , "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 17px; letter-spacing: 0.17px;">How can we get creative with our time and find space in our day to let kids be kids. </span></div>

Their second day at the station is centered more on reading and research. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Many times I will have a print out of information with some questions to answer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This serves a double purpose: I get the reading comprehension practice in and they get to discover some possible answers to questions they may have thought of during their first day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last week we examined snow. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Students "played" with it....yes, they actually got to play...and isn't that how kids learn best. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Through touching it, they got to witness it change states - from a solid to a liquid. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We scooped some snow out into little dishes. By the end of the day it was liquid water. </div>

Now I just need to figure out how to find those dinosaur bones they keep asking about!</div>

<br />
Martin Luther King Day is right around the corner. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is Kid President's thoughts on the day: </div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love his message.<i>.isn't it cool that we can change things?</i> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love this kid too. <br />
Check out his other videos.<br />
They all have positive messages that kids today need to hear. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Recently, my students celebrated New Year's Day. We read a procedural text on how to make a Dream Catcher. We followed the directions to make them.<br />
<img alt=" " height="480" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/22/bc/b7/22bcb7a889cb3f9bc715f1519936025f.jpg" width="640" /><br />

<br />
Then we brainstormed the dreams we wanted to "catch" in 2019.<br />
<br />
My kids had so many different ideas.<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " height="640" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/e2/fb/8e/e2fb8e22735899c40f1730ce5f4a98bd.jpg" width="480" /><br />

<br />
Here is one of my favorites:<br />
What a sweet kid!<br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt=" " src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/32/d4/3b/32d43b0bdd26f353d05b0e0145077fbc.jpg" /><br />
<br />
We displayed them all so they could share their dreams with everyone!<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Here is a different template I have used with my kids before.<br />
In this one, kids brainstorm three different dreams:<br />
One for themselves,<br />
for their school and for the world. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I use this Dream Catcher lesson as a springboard into learning about Martin Luther King. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is a poem that I like to use during our Poetry Station Time. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can find all these activities bundled in this "Let's Be Dream Catchers" set. </div>
