Welcome to my blog!

My name is Doris Young and I am a teacher in Spotsylvania County in Virginia.
Education has been my life's work.
It's hard to believe, but I've been teaching for more than 30 years now!
I've stayed in education for so long because I believe what we do really matters.
Education has changed a lot in those 30 years, but kids are still kids.
These little people crave love and attention from the adults in their lives.
Building connections and relationships with students goes a long way to building academic success. But even more importantly, those teacher/student relationships can help young people grow up to become conscientious, caring and just decent human beings.
I feel as though teaching has always been my calling and I am so fortunate to have found my purpose in this life.
Teaching can be such a rewarding profession, but it also is full of challenges.

I depend on God to guide me and rely on His strength and wisdom both in and out of my classroom.
My faith is a big part of my life.

As important as our job is, I feel that we must strike a balance between home and work.
Outside of the classroom, I love spending time with my family.
They bring me such joy!
They bring me such joy!
My husband and I have been married for almost 30 years and we've been blessed with two amazing children.

William has graduated college and is working in Washington, DC.
Sarah will be a freshman at the University of Virginia next fall.
We are officially empty nesters!
That is, except for this little guy. He's not going anywhere and he definitely keeps us busy and active.

School can be overly consuming if we allow it to be.
Allowing myself a break from work helps to recharge me.
I am a better teacher for it.
Being outdoors, hiking, kayaking, gardening all bring me peace and inner calm.

Living in Virginia there are many ways to unwind, I am close enough to a big city.

And to the mountains....

We are so lucky,
we are also just a few hours from a beach...

Besides venturing to places to get away, I also love just spending time close to home.
Gardening,

visiting local coffee shops,

I'd love for you to join me and become part of a community of teachers who work hard at what they do, but also strive to maintain peace and balance in their lives.
